About Us

History

The American Democracy Project (ADP) is a university-wide initiative designed to prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. The goal of the American Democracy Project is to produce university graduates who are committed to being active citizens in their communities with civic knowledge, skills, and values. The American Democracy Project initiative provides numerous civic and political engagement activities that challenge and encourage students to find their place and make a difference.

The American Democracy Project was started at Fort Hays State University in 2004 and placed within the FHSU Department of Political Science. The national initiative of the American Democracy Project was created by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) in 2003 to prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. FHSU is one of two participating universities in Kansas.

Our Mission

The mission of the Fort Hays State University American Democracy Project is to promote civil discourse, education, and engagement at the local, state, and national levels of government in order to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to be active, engaged citizens in our democracy.

National Initiative

The American Democracy Project is a nonpartisan initiative created by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to promote quality civic education, started in 2003. Fort Hays State is one of two participating universities in Kansas.

Tiger Talkback

Each week ADP posts a question on the whiteboard in the Memorial Union. The questions are about a current social or political issue that corresponds with a recently published New York Times Article.
